Afternote Local is a free, independently maintained project by Danny Kim. This page explains the Local beta and keeps the original hosted service terms separate.
Afternote Local
Software license and model terms
The Local application is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. This notice explains the beta; it does not replace that license or restrict rights it grants. Bundled models and dependencies have separate licenses and, where applicable, use restrictions. Read the model terms and the notices included with the release.
Best-effort beta
Development, maintenance, and support are provided on a best-effort basis. There is no guaranteed response time, fix schedule, continued development, or compatibility with future macOS or AI-tool versions. Downloading the free beta does not include a service-level agreement or a support contract.
Warranty and liability
Unless applicable law requires otherwise or a separate written agreement says otherwise, Afternote Local is provided as-is, without warranties. It may contain bugs, return incomplete or incorrect results, become unavailable, or lose data. Sections 7 and 8 of the Apache License 2.0 set out the warranty disclaimer and limitations of contributor liability, including their exceptions. Nothing in this notice excludes rights or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Backups and checking results
Keep independent backups of information you need. Afternote Local is not a backup service, and the maintainer cannot recover your local vault or its encryption key for you. Check recalled notes and AI answers against their sources before relying on them. Assess whether the beta and each connected AI tool meet your needs and any workplace requirements before saving confidential or regulated information.
Connected tools and privacy
Local supports approved AI-tool connections. Text returned to those tools can reach their providers and is subject to their terms and privacy practices. Revoking a connection prevents further authorized access through it; it does not recall copies already received. Read the Local privacy notice and security boundaries.

Revisions to this notice will be dated on this page; Local does not require an account or collect an email address for notices. Changes here do not revoke rights already granted under the software license. Questions or support requests: hello@afternote.dev.

The following text, dated May 25, 2026, applies to the original hosted service with Google sign-in. It does not describe the Local Mac app or a future Cloud offering.
Plain-English terms for using afternote during early access. By using afternote, you agree to what’s below.
Eligibility
To use afternote, you must be at least 18 years old. By signing up, you confirm that you are.
Your account
You sign in with Google. You’re responsible for anything that happens under your account. If you think your account has been misused, let us know and we’ll help.
Your notes
Your notes belong to you. They’re stored so the app can show them back to you, run AI features over them, and answer your questions about them. Afternote doesn’t sell your data and doesn’t train models on it. Don’t put anything illegal or harmful into afternote.
AI output
Afternote uses large language models to extract, classify, and answer questions about your notes. These models make mistakes — sometimes confidently. Don’t treat AI output as fact for anything that matters without checking the source note.
Acceptable use
Don’t scrape, automate, or run bots against afternote. Don’t share one account across a team or resell access. Don’t use it to harass anyone or store anything illegal. Accounts causing real cost or harm may be rate-limited or suspended — we’ll try to reach out first.
Pricing
Afternote is free during early access. See /pricing for the founding-user promise. That promise is a best-effort commitment, not a contract — “within reason” means within reason.
No warranties, limited liability
Afternote is provided as-is, without warranties of any kind. It may have bugs, lose data, or be unavailable. We’ll do our best to prevent that, but can’t guarantee it. To the maximum extent permitted by law, afternote is not liable for indirect, consequential, or incidental damages — including lost profits, business disruption, or lost data. Total liability is capped at what you’ve paid, which during early access is $0.
Ending things
You can delete your account at any time. Access may be ended for violating these terms or for serious abuse. If afternote ever needs to shut down, you’ll get reasonable notice and a way to export your notes.
Changes
These terms may change as afternote grows. Material changes will be sent by email before they take effect.
